When should i reveal the villain?

You could open with X disposing of Y's body, but not say explicitly that it's X. Like, give one or two very vague hints about the identity of the person disposing of Y. And then as the story progresses, give a few more hints periodically, until the reader and protagonist figure it out simultaneously. The reader might suspect it's X, but won't be certain.
